The name of God, as revealed in the Bible, plays a major role in the way that God is understood and communicated. This four-letter theonym never disappeared from within the Hebrew Bible copies. Despite the religious interpretations that daunted Jews from public pronunciation since the 3rd or 2nd cent. ΒCE, this theonym remained virtually intact within the text of the Hebrew scriptures.

However, this hasn’t been the case in Bible translations in other languages, like Greek, Syriac, Latin, English, etc. Novel religious explications and injunctions targeted the free oral use of the divine name and made it invisible within written texts. At this webinar, some intriguing cases of the Bible transmission and translation will be highlighted and discussed that testify to the persistent presence of God’s name in written and oral speech, as reflected in the copies of the Old and New Testaments all over the centuries.
