Biblical names are often found on beverages, this includes beer. It is not surprising that several types of beer have biblical names, this is because European brewing tradition is closely linked to monasteries. The Benedictine monks were at the forefront of beer production in Europe for several centuries. Beer brewing, prayer and Bible studies went hand in hand at the Benedictine monasteries.
The Benedictine monk’s beer production dates back to the Middle ages. Scheyern Abbey, the third oldest brewery in Bayern, has produced beer since the year 1119. The monastery has recently started exporting its beer internationally, including to Norway.
The tradition of naming beers after biblical characters or concepts has never died out. Today, there are numerous beers with biblical names on the market, such as Samson, Apostel, Holy Moses, Baptista, Don de Dieu, and El Diablo.
