What is Ascension Day?
Ascension Day is a holiday that is marked in commemoration of Jesus, according to the evangelists in the New Testament, was brought up to heaven.
Jesus Christ returned to heaven 40 days after his resurrection. This took place on the Mount of Olives on the east side of Jerusalem. The story in the Bible tells that he was “lifted up as they watched” and that “a cloud took him up, away from their eyes”. Only his 11 trusted apostles were witnesses to his ascension.
It was necessary for several reasons that Jesus ascended to heaven. He had said, among other things, that he had “go away” to be able to send God’s Holy Ghost as a help to his disciples (John 16:7-14).

The marking was probably introduced in the 300s when certain denominations began to celebrate it.
